I get asked quite frequently whats in my bag and for camera recommendations to buy to capture your memories between sessions with Piper + Claire.  So, I thought I’d spend some time discussing these topics on the blog today just in time for the holidays if a camera is on your to-buy list.
First:  What’s in my bag:

piper and claire whats in my bag

canon 5d mark iii – two bodies
canon ef 85mm 1.2L – my favorite portrait lens
canon ef 50mm 1.2L – another favorite for smaller spaces
canon ef 24mm 1.4L – a storytelling lens I use to set the scene
canon ef 35mm 1.4L – another favorite wider angle
canon ef 100mm 2.8 macro IS – for the close-up details
canon ef 70-200mm 2.8 IS
(2) canon 580 ex speedlite flash (just in case!)
a handfull of 32gb and 16gb sandisk extreme pro CF cards for quick shooting in RAW

I absolutely love my Stash camera bag from Moose and Pine – you can find one here.  I purchase all my lenses from here:  https://www.bhphotovideo.com/
My camera recommendations for you:
Now, on to what you’re really interested in.  I’m a Canon girl and started out with the Rebel so if you’re looking for a good DSLR to start with that is my recommendation along with the 50mm 1.8.  A lot of the Rebel’s linked here include a kit lens (for example 18 – 55mm).  These can be great storytelling lenses (lenses that show the entire scene you are photographing).  The 50mm lens is going to be your go-to portrait lens (typically just one or two subjects closer up and not showing their environment).
If you’re not quite ready for a DSLR but still want a camera that is going to produce high quality images but not be cumbersome to carry around I have a point and shoot recommendation for you:  the Sony RX100.  What I love about this point and shoot camera is that its small and lightweight but still works great in low light situations and also has an option to shoot in manual mode.  It’s a great way to start to begin to learn the world of photography without investing in a big fancy camera :)
In the spirit of helping you document all the memories in between your sessions with Piper + Claire, I’m working behind the scenes on a free training focusing on improving how you photograph your kids.  Click here to sign up to my newsletter to be the first to know when it’s released!
If you’re not quite ready to purchase a fancy camera but your loved one loves photography – how about a gift certificate for a session with me for their present this year? I love the idea of gifting experiences rather than more things, and I’d love to brainstorm a unique session documenting your family in 2016.
